Stargear.net Upgrades Page
Listed below are some suggested upgrades
that you might consider if you are sailing an older boat.
These will make sailing the Star considerably easier
allowing you to focus on the race.
Double Mainsheet
If you are still sailing with a single
mainsheet you are really missing the boat on this. Guys
with the double mainsheet are able to get the main sheeted
in at the mark twice as fast leaving you behind still
sheeting in the main.
Here is what is needed to convert to a
double mainsheet system. We use the mainsheet externally
for less friction.

Spectra Backstay
Upgrade from your wire to spectra. The
spectra runs a lot smoother. Don't cut the wire until you
have the spectra and are ready to install the spectra. You
don't have to cut the wire to measure it. To measure the
wire pull out the wire backstay and make a mark on it.
Measure form the mark to the end where the backstay
adjustments attached. Now pull in the backstay line, the
mark you made will disappear under the deck. Look under the
deck for the mark you made and measure to the other end of
the wire and add the two measurements together. Then add 2
ft to the total (need for the splices at each end) Do not
tie the spectra as this decrease the strength.
We suggest you look at 3/16"
Samson Amsteel. Amsteel is easily spliceable.
Upper and Lower Backstay Adjustment
System
The upper backstay has 6 to 1 purchase. It
is a 2 to 1 followed by a 3 to 1. The lower backstay has a
4 to 1 purchase.
Usually the lower is already 4 to 1
purchase. So we will focus on the upper making it 6 to 1.
