2004 Biscayne Trophy
Reported by Joe Londrigan
This years Biscayne Bay Star Regatta
was not for the faint of heart. Sixty three entries,
including twelve world champions, showed up for this
weekend’s event to test there skills. With this being an
Olympic year the field was deep and well practiced.
Saturday’s race was sailed in a light
northerly breeze with the crews on the low side. In order
to complete the race the race committee had to shorten the
course to make the time limit. While this seemed like a
good idea at the time it back fired with over 30 boats
trying to cross the line at the same time. The mass
conversion on the line made it impossible to record the
finishes and the race committee had to throw out the race.
Sunday’s races were sailed in a
southerly breeze between 5-8kts and a heavy chop. Those
sailors who protected the left side of the course made out
in both races by sailing in more wind. Peter Wright and Dan
Wright played it correct and finished 3rd in the
series, the top US boat, proving that practice is
overrated. On the way out of the parking lot Peter asked,
”What have you guys been doing the past 10 years.” All
kidding aside this fleet was rich in talent and very
skilled. Congratulations go to Freddie Loof and Andey
Ekstrom for a well a well sailed series.
Quote of the week:
Todd Gay was quoted as saying” I have
no trouble keeping it clean” took a OCS on Sundays second
race.
